On 25–27 February 2009 in BangkokThailand, the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ASEAN-BIS) was held with the theme “People-to-People: Commitment towards ASEAN Prosperity”. The significance of the 2008 ASEAN-BIS is bolstering the first year implementation of the AEC Blueprint and taking up the concerns and responses of the private sector on the global financial

and economic crisis. Prominent public and private sector personalities and representatives from international organizations took part in the event as speakers.

A general view arising out of the conference expressed by the private sector is that for the economic community to realize, much still need to be done to facilitate ground issues affecting companies operating in the region. In the main, the private sector sees that market integration will stimulate business opportunities, create employment and stimulate much needed regional demand and consumption activities to address the weakening export-related investment activities in the region.

Winners of the ASEAN Business Awards (ABA) were announced at the ASEAN-BIS closing ceremony gala dinner on 27 February 2009. Eight companies clinched the awards and recognized as the Most Admired ASEAN Enterprise in growth; employment; innovation; and corporate social responsibility. They were also showcased as ASEAN companies which have contributed to the growth of the ASEAN economy and potential global players.
